Our Intent for our Computing curriculum

Our computing curriculum is designed to meet the content of the National Curriculum. It prepares pupils to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly transformed by access to varied and developing technology. We recognise that using technology correctly and confidently is an important tool in both the society we live in and in the process of teaching and learning. Pupils use ICT tools to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information responsibly, creatively and with discrimination. They learn how to employ ICT to enable rapid access to ideas and experiences from a wide range of sources. Our vision is for all teachers and learners in our school to become confident users of ICT so that they can develop the skills, knowledge and understanding which enables them to be confident, creative and independent learners.

Our Implementation for our Computing curriculum

Our Computing lessons are based on a big question each half term. As the aims of computing are to equip children with the skills necessary to use technology to become independent learners, the teaching style that we adopt is as active and practical as possible. While at times we do give children direct instruction on how to use hardware and software, the main emphasis of our teaching in ICT is for individuals or groups of children to use computers to help them in whatever they are studying. ICT contributes to teaching and learning in all curriculum areas and is used throughout the curriculum as well as planned units of work, which can be found in the curriculum long term plan. We have an annual Computing week, which we tie in with the national on-line safety day and plan competitions and have experts come into school for assemblies and workshops to allow children to see how these skills can be transferred into careers. Computing is taught by class teachers.

The impact of our Computing Curriculum

Our curriculum equips children with the skills to become digital-literate. Children will learn key vocabulary and should be to recall this in everyday life. We aim for children to have a knowledge and understanding of computer programmes through writing and debugging code, children will be able to solve problems using technology and computational thinking is encouraged. Children will build resilience through their work and are encouraged to learn from their mistakes. We are actively teaching skills for children to become confident in an ever-growing digital world.

Our computing skills are developed across the entire curriculum. You may also spot us using office programs such as Word and Powerpoint which support our learning in other areas.  We have an annual computing activity with local schools organised with Helsby. Each year we have a Computing Week and participate in safer online days.  We also provide E-Safety training for parents and guardians.
